SID Increases Investment in Special Duty Officers

The SIDs have added additional special duty officers this summer to provide a reassuring presence downtown. These officers will complement our regular 240 special duty officers who work in cruisers from 10 am – 11 pm most days of the week. A team comprised of two special duty officers will patrol on foot or on bike two to three times per week. Although they can provide enforcement, their primary function is community engagement.

Our 240 special duty officers focus on "downtown hotspots" where drug activity, open container, aggressive panhandling, and intimidating behavior frequently occurs. In partnership with our ambassadors, these officers provide consistent crime prevention by interacting with people on the streets in both the Capital Crossroads and Discovery districts.  We are thankful to have these officers working with us to keep downtown safe and vibrant.
