Ambassadors Learn About Therapeutic Engagement

Recently, ambassadors from both districts attended a one-hour training on therapeutic engagement lead by Yolanda Board, MS, LPCC-S, Interim Director of Clinical Services with North Community Counseling Centers.

"Our ambassador team frequently interacts with individuals who are in crisis.  Some appear to be suffering from mental health and/or addiction issues," shared SID Deputy Director of Operations  Lisa Defendiefer.

"The purpose of this training was to provide our team with additional skills they can use when engaging with these individuals. The training focused on the importance of understanding and being empathetic, being an active listener, and showing respect.  All of these actions help de-escalate individuals who are agitated," she added.

One ambassador, Sheppard, who participated in the training explained what he gained from the experience.

“The mental health training we received is relevant to what we deal with on the job. It will help our team to recognize when someone may be at risk or may have mental health challenges and give us the tools to respond helpfully rather than just react.”
