Ryan and Bill, SID outreach team
Bill, with the SID's outreach team, found Ben living in a park on Town Street. Ben was sleeping in the park but keeping his belongings at another location.
The SID's outreach team had previously assisted Ben C, but due to mental health and addiction issues, he found himself experiencing homelessness again. Bill asked if he would like help with the supported housing process again, which he did.
Unfortunately, the Community Shelter Board’s supportive housing rules require that an individual have a disability and a significant period of homelessness, usually one year in the past three.
Because Ben had been in housing for over three years and experiencing homelessness for only a few months, he needed to wait to start the process to get housed. Eventually, Bill was able to help him apply for supportive housing to the Community Shelter Board, and his application was accepted.
He received keys to his apartment in February 2021 and reports that he gets along well with the manager of the housing facility. The facility provides Ben with mental health counseling, AA meeting availability, help finding resources for food, clothing, and hygiene items, and transportation to appointments.
The Capital Crossroads and Discovery SID Homeless Outreach team help individuals experiencing homelessness to find housing and connect them to services. If you see someone experiencing homelessness, contact the SID Hotline at (614) 228-5718.
