Ambassadors in Action

Ted and Sarah, clean ambassadors for the Capital Crossroads SID, clean up dead leaves from a flower bed as part of the SID’s spring cleaning this year.

#1 Spring Cleaning Underway in Downtown Cbus (CCSID)

Spring has sprung, and many of us have been out and about on the downtown streets taking in the sunny skies and warmer temps. Capital Crossroads and Discovery SID Ambassadors work year-round to keep the downtown environment in tip-top shape. And, spring is the season for some serious sprucing up.

The Ambassador teams are hard at work scrubbing away the winter grime and preparing Downtown for the influx of people who will be returning after a year of COVID shutdowns. Returning employees and visitors will enjoy a downtown that shines thanks to the following tasks:

Cleaning activities include:

  • Weed control
  • Sweeping salt and gravel from gutters and curb lines
  • Pressure washing alleyways, trash cans, sidewalks
  • Cleaning wayfinding signs, and newspaper racks
  • Painting bike racks
  • Putting new gravel in the tree grates,
  • Preparing the capital square planters, Gay Street, and Nationwide Boulevard medians for spring planting
  • Tree trimming as needed.

SID ambassadors take pride in their work and the downtown community. Follow the Capital Crossroads Special Improvement Districts on Facebook or Instagram to see their work in progress.

Damien, Darrell, and Johnny are on the streets Downtown every day to help keep the neighborhood clean, safe and vibrant for you. Need their help? Call us at (614) 228-5718.

#2 Returning Downtown: What to Expect

CCSID

It’s been more than a year since many of us have been to the office, enjoyed an event at the Columbus Commons, attended the theatre, or visited downtown Columbus.

The Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District (SID), an association of commercial and residential property owners, has been working hard to keep downtown Columbus safe and vibrant.

SID ambassadors are getting the neighborhood ready for your return to downtown. SID ambassadors, in blue and yellow uniforms, are picking up trash, removing graffiti, pressure washing, weeding, and more.

They want to make sure you feel comfortable downtown. Don’t hesitate to ask SID ambassadors for a lunch recommendation, directions to get you where you need to go, or even as an escort to your car. They’re here seven days a week.

You can reach us at (614) 228-5718. Visit DowntownServices.org to learn more about SID services.

DSID

#3 Keeping a High Profile in Downtown Columbus

CCSID

For more than 20 years, the smiling faces of Capital Crossroads SID ambassadors have embodied the spirit of our community and provided a visible presence in downtown Columbus.

Our roving ambassadors are on duty seven days a week, year-round to help you — whether that means recommending a place for lunch, walking you to your car, or simply offering helpful directions to get you where you need to go. Just look for the folks wearing the blue and yellow shirts with the “i” on the sleeve.

The ambassadors keep downtown clean and safe for us each day. You can catch them roaming on their bicycles or by foot, picking up trash, removing graffiti, pressure-washing, and safely escorting people throughout downtown. And that’s only the start of how they help our community.

Find out more about what ambassadors do at DowntownServices.org. or follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

#4 Best Kept Secret in Downtown

CCSID

Psst, we’ve been here 20 years!

Downtown Columbus, the city’s central business district, is a hub of activity that includes an eclectic variety of restaurants and bars, retail and service providers, green space, public art, and historical cultural institutions.

One of downtown’s best-kept secrets is a fleet of uniformed ambassadors, hired by downtown property owners, to maintain downtown Columbus as a clean, inviting, and comfortable neighborhood.

Managed by the Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District, SID ambassadors rove around downtown sidewalks by foot and bicycle picking up litter, removing graffiti, landscaping, offering directions or courtesy escorts, and responding to people in crisis.

By paying attention to these details, SID ambassadors improve the urban experience for employees, residents, and visitors. To learn more about SID ambassadors, visit DowntownServices.org.

Psst, we’ve been here 14 years!

The Discovery District on the eastern part of downtown Columbus is a hub of activity that includes historical cultural institutions, museums, greenspace, an eclectic variety of restaurants and bars, retail, and service providers.

#5 Downtown, one of the safest areas in the city

Downtown Columbus continues to be the city’s central business district and cultural hub. It also remains one of the safest neighborhoods in the city.

Collaboration among private and public security professionals in downtown Columbus and spearheaded by the Capital Crossroads and Discovery Special Improvement Districts bring an extra layer of security not found anywhere else.

These security professionals, employed by major employers and commercial office buildings, can communicate with each other through a Downtown Link radio program set up by the SIDs to report and share information on criminal activity.

In addition, the SIDs hire special duty police offers to proactively patrol downtown streets and engage with security professionals and community stakeholders to address public safety concerns.

The bottom line is that these layers of security create a safe environment in downtown Columbus safe for residents, visitors, and employees.

#6 SID Ambassadors Keep Downtown Welcoming

The Capital Crossroads & Discovery SID Ambassadors are on the job seven days a week to ensure Downtown is inviting and welcoming to everyone.

Their goal is to keep Downtown Columbus vibrant with enhanced clean, safe, and beautification services made possible by Downtown Columbus property owners including (insert name of property owner/manager here)

Services include directions, escorts and other hospitality services, pressure washing sidewalks, litter removal, beautification, and homeless outreach. The ambassadors report criminal and nuisance activity and work with our special duty police officers to address unlawful behavior and improve public safety downtown.

The SIDs also employs two outreach specialists that help downtown’s most vulnerable populations.

Call the SID Hotline 614-228-5718 if you need assistance or see someone else who does.

Ryan and Bill, the SIDs outreach specialists, served nearly 1,000 clients in 2020.

#7 Help is Available

The Capital Crossroads and Discovery Special Improvement Districts (SIDs) provide outreach and services to people experiencing homelessness in downtown.

All SID ambassadors are trained to conduct wellness checks and provide information to find meals and access services.

Thanks to financial support (name of property) and other downtown property owners and managers, the SID has hired two outreach specialists to help those in need find shelter, permanent housing, and other resources.

Specifically, the outreach team:

  • Finds temporary or permanent supportive housing
  • Helps clients with criminal records find work
  • Connects clients with physical or mental disabilities with services
  • Links veterans to eligible services
  • Helps clients obtain copies of birth certificates
  • Pays application fees, transportation, access to the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio, utility assistance, and small household items.

In 2020, Bill and Ryan, the outreach team, provided more than 3,600 hours of service, serving over 1,000 clients, and connected nearly 100 clients to permanent or emergency shelter.

If you see someone in need, please contact the SID Hotline at (614) 228-5718.
