Collaboration Key to Success

Thanks to collaboration among the security community in the Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District, a robbery suspect was arrested by the police last month.

On the morning of Friday, August 14th, someone broke into the Atrium Lofts and Dr. Jim Ford's office. The SID was able to aid detectives on the case that eventually led to the arrest of the suspect 2 weeks later.

The SID was notified via email by Atrium Lofts residents of the break-ins at the two buildings. Hours of footage was collected from the two buildings and surrounding areas. This helped to identify the person that committed the crimes. Screenshots of the suspect were captured that showed the individual's face with the mask pulled down.

The SID was able to positively identify Laquan Dickerson as the suspect. Safety ambassadors had engaged with Dickerson the week before to have him admitted to a hospital for severe mental health issues but he was released a few days later.

Over the next few days, the SID cooperated with the detectives on the case by supplying the footage which led to a warrant being issued for Dickerson's arrest. The SID notified security managers around in the Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District about Dickerson and asked to notify police if he was spotted in the area.

In the last week of August, a COTA service supervisor spotted him on Broad and High Police were notified and Dickerson was arrested and charged with four counts of breaking and entering. Two of the charges were related to the incidents at Atrium lofts and Dr. Jim Ford's office. The other two were related to break-ins at other locations.

"Their response and willingness to assist was spectacular and went way beyond what we should expect of them.  We feel very lucky to have such a responsive and active Special Improvement District whose year-round programming and services supplement the daily work of the ambassadors on foot and on bikes," said Dr. Ford when asked about the work of the Capital Crossroads ambassadors.
