Three Artists Selected for Public Art Initiative

Thanks in part to generous donors, and support from a community steering committee, Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District is pleased to announce the winners of the Restroom Public Art Project. Three local artists created original work for the new, permanent public restrooms and their utility boxes that were recently installed in downtown Columbus.

Congratulations to the following artists:

Maya Pinz, recent graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design, was selected for the restroom at 3rd and Broad Streets. Maya's proposal and design focus on the many diverse faces of Columbus, featuring members of the community amid a background of red carnations, our state flower.

Daniel Rona is a Columbus artist whose work as a muralist can be found all over the city. Selected for the restroom at High and Long Streets, Daniel's proposal features a vibrant floral garden with playful characters amidst the blooms, representing the resilience and curiosity of Columbus.

Asa Compton is a concept artist, illustrator and recent graduate of Columbus College of Art and Design. Focusing on atmosphere, Asa is interested in reimagining historical-based designs and architecture. Asa was selected for the restroom at Lynn and High Streets, his designs depicting playful renditions of iconic destinations and scenery from around the state, including the Columbus Zoo, Hocking Hills, The Ohio State University, and rolling farmlands.

The three artists have designed artwork for one restroom and utility box each, including the exterior and interior of the restroom. The project is intended to create visibility for the restrooms, add some vibrancy to the streetscape, and support local artists. The SIDs, in partnership with the City of Columbus, installed the restrooms in 2023 to address the critical lack of free and accessible restrooms in downtown.
